After a long day at work, it can be easy to come home and just need to relax. While sometimes you do need a break, other times you should try to take advantage of the evening. Coming up with a successful after-work routine is key to maximizing your day and setting yourself up for success.
Without having a structured after-work routine, or at least a few checklist items you would like to do each day, it can be hard to stay focused. For me, when I sit down to relax “for just a minute” after work, I usually end up getting nothing done. Once you give yourself too much of a break it is hard to motivate yourself to get much of anything done.
To avoid this, having an after-work routine is essential. I am not saying you should never take a break, there are many times that I do take breaks that may prevent things from getting done. Instead, I am suggesting that you try to have a routine so that a “rest day” does not become every day. Continue reading to learn some great ideas for an after-work routine!

Why Is an After-Work Routine Important?
The importance of an after-work routine cannot be understated. Trying to get things done after work will always be a challenge because work often leaves us tired and in need of a break. For many of us, that after-work period is a time for us to decompress and take it easy. The problem is that the after-work period is also a big chunk of time that can be used to get things done.
If you work a normal job, you should be home somewhere between 5 PM and 7 PM. Depending on your bedtime, you have 4-6 hours to be used. Of course, some of that time is taken up by having dinner, but there is plenty of time still to be allocated!
Basically, an after-work routine is important if you want to be efficient with your time and use it in the best way possible. Also, do not feel like your after-work routine needs to be the same each day. Feel free to vary it as needed to do the things that make the most impact on each day!
5 Simple Ideas for a Great After-Work Routine
Now that we are on the same page about the importance of an after-work routine, we can dive into some ideas! Check out 5 ideas for a great after-work routine below.
1. Change Out of Your Work Clothes
The first tip is to change out of your work clothes! This idea may seem very basic, but should be Step 1 for you! By changing out of your work clothes, you are also changing yourself out of work mode and into an at-home mode. A small change like this can change your mindset, whether you notice right away or not. By getting into more comfortable or functional at-home clothes, you will be able to get out of your work mindset and leave the stress of work behind you. This is a great start to your after-work routine and an easy one to get started with!
2. Exercise
Another idea for your after-work routine is to add in some exercise. Exercise is a great way to destress while also making a positive impact on your body and mind. You do not need to start a massive routine or run 5 miles every day after work. Small, short workouts are all you need to make progress!
Exercise can vary each day depending on how much time you have, but it is good to add some to your routine. You will feel happier, healthier, and less stressed with this easy addition to your routine.
3. Unplug
The next idea is to unplug as an after-work routine. Most of us spend the day looking at a screen, doing all of our work on the internet. At the end of the day, it can be nice to take a step back from being attached to your screen and do other things. Activities like reading a book, cooking, or going for a walk are great ways to unplug and have some personal time.
In the age of the internet, you are always reachable instantly from any part of the world, so taking time for yourself to be away from that interconnectedness can be a breath of fresh air.
4. Knock Out Some Easy Chores
The next addition to make to your after-work routine is to knock out some easy chores. We have all been in a situation where you have guests coming over and you suddenly need to clean up. If you do not regularly do chores, this can be a massive pain. To solve this problem you should try to knock out small chores little by little each day. It does not take long to do the dishes each day, vacuum every Tuesday, or clean the bathroom on Thursdays as long as you stay on top of it. Doing chores slowly in this way will guarantee you a clean home with less effort than it may seem to take!
5. Do Something You Look Forward To
Lastly, your after-work routine should include doing something that you can look forward to. This might be watching TV, exercising, having a favorite meal, or meeting up with friends. Whatever it may be, make sure your afternoon routine includes something that makes you happy and helps you stay positive. If it does, you will be much more likely to get that thing done and be productive!
