Summer Morning Routine
Why is a Morning Routine Important in the Summer?
For some people, the summertime comes with many changes. If you are a student or if your kids are in school, I’m sure all your daily routines look vastly different in the summer compared to the rest of the year. While these differences are both necessary and welcomed, continuing a routine will be very beneficial. The best place to start is a summer morning routine.
Why Should Your Morning Routine Change in the Summer Months?
As I mentioned above, the summer can come with significant changes. For some, the most obvious change in the summer is school scheduling. For others, it might be the differences in weather and length of the day also affect your morning routine. A summer morning routine should be similar to your typical morning routine, but there should be some adjustments. Keep reading to learn some of the most important changes.
1. Drink Water
In the summer, it is especially important to stay hydrated. Starting first thing in the morning is the best way to make sure you drink enough throughout the day. After a full night of drinking little to no water, you should try to finish a full glass of water before anything else.
Also, if you’re trying to rehydrate more quickly, opt for room-temperature water rather than ice water. While the ice water might taste more refreshing in the moment, it will actually take longer to rehydrate you. This is because your body will need to warm it up to room temperature first.
A great way to implement this is by putting a glass of water by your bed the night before. This will help you remember and make it much easier to follow through.

2. Wear Sunscreen
The UV index is typically higher in the summer than during the rest of the year. This makes sunscreen very essential every day. After getting out of the shower, you should make sure you sunscreen at least your face and chest.
If you’re planning to spend more time outside and have more skin showing, you should apply more sunscreen in those areas. In addition, you should be sure to bring sunscreen with you to be prepared if you need to reapply.
Many face moisturizers have sunscreen in them which makes for an easy way to incorporate sunscreen into your summer morning routine. You can also place your sunscreen next to something you use every morning, like your toothbrush. It will be easier to remember your sunscreen if you associate it with a habit you’re already used to doing.
3. Take a Cool Shower
If your house gets especially hot, a cool morning shower is a great opportunity to cool down before starting the day. It doesn’t have to be a cold shower, but maybe try cooler than normal. For me, this feels the best after morning exercise in the sun.
Due to the heat in the summer, taking a shower every morning to wash your face and body is very important. This will keep you feeling and smelling fresh. For more shower tips specifically for summertime, take a look at this article!
4. Open the Windows
The morning is a good opportunity to let in some fresh air before it gets too hot. Not only will this allow you to let in some fresh air, but it will also likely reduce your bill for air conditioning. Typically as long as it’s cooler outside than inside, opening the windows will be beneficial. This article explains the additional benefits of opening your windows.
For me, this means they’re open first thing in the morning and I’ll usually reopen them after work to try to cool down my apartment before bed.

5. Get Outside
In the summer, exercising or walking outside in the middle of the day can be really tough and possibly dangerous depending on the temperature. For that reason, these outside activities should be incorporated into your morning routine. This is somewhere that your morning routine might look different in the summer.
Maybe you typically go on runs in the afternoon but have been having trouble following through due to the weather. That is completely understandable, but instead of waiting for a day with a cooler afternoon, try to shift your run to the morning. This will help you stay more consistent because the mornings typically have cooler weather.
In addition to taking advantage of the milder temperatures in the mornings for exercising, they should be enjoyed even if you’re not exercising. Maybe you can try drinking your coffee on the porch instead of inside on your couch. This will help you get some fresh air before moving on to the rest of your day.

6. Work Toward Waking Up Earlier
The earlier you wake up, the more you can fit into your morning routine. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have a successful and productive morning routine without waking up super early but you should at least give it a try.
The summer is a great time to start trying to wake up earlier because the sun comes up earlier. I usually keep a consistent wake-up time throughout the year, but that time is much easier in the summer than in the winter. When the sun is already peeking through the clouds, it is far more motivating to get out of bed.
It is also good to start waking up earlier in the summer because it is helpful to beat the heat for some activities. As I mentioned above, if you normally run in the afternoons but want to start running in the mornings, you’ll need to wake up earlier to accommodate that.
In addition, on the weekends when you plan to exercise outside, you should be mindful of the temperature. Even though it is the weekend, it might be worth heading out early to beat the heat. Keep in mind that even though you might be getting up early, you can continue a slower, more relaxed morning routine after you get back.
